Action Day – STEM Education

Action Day – STEM Education

On 25 March we are calling all clubs, leagues and FAs to highlight their STEM education initiatives. We have gathered a few examples of how football organisations have worked with pupils across Europe on STEM topics.

Aston Villa FC

Aston Villa Football Club and the Aston Villa Foundation have acknowledged the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and are determined to close the skills gap within the city. They have partnered with Sphero, gaining access to BOLT, Sphero’s most advanced coding robotic ball to date, providing even more ways to express inventive ideas and experience the power of programming. Coding classes are already being offered in schools where children can play and create their own educational games, whilst learning how to code through hands-on play activities.

Everton in the Community

E-STEAM is an initiative by Everton in the Community that seeks to engage and inspire communities, young and old in the amazing world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.

E-STEAM has been developed in response to the changing landscape of an industry that is moving towards an increased digital and technological presence and with the gap between the skills young people learn and the skills people need becoming more obvious. Working with employers and partner organisations, the ambitious E-STEAM initiative will inspire a generation of young people through fun, practical and aspirational learning using technology, engaging resources and imaginative delivery to help thousands of people across the Liverpool City region develop these crucial skills of the future.

Chelsea FC Foundation

Digital Blue is one of a number of unique programmes run by the Foundation’s Education team, focusing on science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) with lessons and challenges including youngsters designing their own stadium and football boots and building their own remote-controlled robots.

The Chelsea FC Foundation’s Digital Blue – Career Inspiration programme offers students the opportunity to enjoy interactive content designed to reinforce key STEM skills while exploring exciting STEM careers that await.

Foundation 92

The EFDN member delivers a number of STEM Education workshops including their sessions with Oakwood Academy every Friday. Foundation 92 also deliver 1 to 1 SEND STEM Education sessions to support individuals to gain confidence in a number of areas. Their Traineeship is another area of work delivering STEM Education. There, they teach young people aged 16-18 the skills to prepare them for employment! We love to see the different STEM-related offers!

EFDN STEM NETWORK

The EFDN STEM Football & Education Programme is a pan-European project selected for financial support from UEFA Foundation for Children aiming to promote STEM Education amongst European youth. STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – is the field that helps children learn how to program, make codes, and understand technological devices. Statistics tell us there are currently more than a million job vacancies in the STEM industry, while at the same time only 16% of college students graduate in STEM fields or subjects. Demand for STEM jobs increased three times between 2000 and 2010, and continues to grow, with many new fields and professions emerging each day. With the support of project partner Sphero and their supplemental resources, EFDN plans to deliver STEM Education programmes across Europe using the power of football to keep children engaged and committed to learning.
