‘Football Memories’, by Morton in the Community #MorethanFootball
Wednesday 5th April 2017 saw Morton in the Community welcome 20 football fans to Cappielow for their, ever popular, Football Memories group.
In partnership with Alzheimer’s Scotland and Inverclyde Carers Centre participants are encouraged to speak about the good old days and their past heroes. Sessions based at Cappielow Park, Home of Greenock Morton FC, are held monthly and are aimed at people with Dementia.
Sessions follow a similar layout to a traditional football match which include a first and second half. Participants will also receive a pie and bovril at half time again to reminisce further and hopefully stimulate memories through smell.
Brian McLaughlin, Development Manager, commented, “Of all our projects we deliver I personally feel Football Memories is making a huge difference to peoples life’s. We have seen our oldest player aged at 83 years old attend the sessions, which shows we are providing opportunities for all residents of Inverclyde no matter what age/stage they are in their life to develop under the Morton badge. Special thanks to Tracy and her team at Alzheimer’s Scotland and the countless volunteers who give up their time to give people an opportunity and a sense of purpose ”
Morton legend, Alan McGraw, who visited the group before Christmas made a special impression on one participant who was quoted as saying, “I’ve had such a wonderful time today that I feel like crying”.
