Juventus Signs Sports for Climate Action and Climate Neutral Now Agreements

Juventus FC is the first Italian football club and the 150th signatory of the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework. These include FIFA, UEFA and IOC (International Olympic Committee), as well as many other sport entities from around the world.

The UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework unites the global sports community in the fight against climate change, supporting the objectives in line with the Paris Accords.

The participants of this program are committed to maintaining five principles:

  • Taking systematic measures to promote more environmental awareness
  • Reducing the impact on our climate
  • Educating on positive behaviour towards the climate
  • Promoting more sustainable and responsible consumption
  • Supporting actions to help the environment through communication campaigns

The next 10 years have been defined as the Decade of Action by Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations. The Decade of Action calls for the acceleration of the implementation of sustainable solutions to address the world’s greatest challenges. Juventus has decided to reaffirm its commitment to sustainability by joining these UN agreements and by playing an active role so that the football sector can be on its was to a low-carbon future.

Moreover, Juventus is the first Italian football club to join the Climate Neutral Now initiative, established in 2015 by the UN. The project encourages individuals, clubs and companies to voluntarily measure, reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions.

As required by these two initiatives, the club has been measuring and reporting its environmental data since 2013 through the Sustainability Report, which shows a clear and transparent path for achieving the goals of the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Since last season, all the electrical energy consumed by Juventus is 100% renewable. The next step will be offsetting the club’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions through UN-certified emission reductions (CER). UN CERs are carbon credits generated from projects that respect the climate adhering to regulations approved at the intergovernmental level with international supervision.

In the coming years, Juventus will commit to reducing the Scope 3 emissions. This is related to First Team and Youth Sector movements and the mobility of fans for home games.

Through these objectives, Juventus aims to reenforce its dedication and favour positive actions and behaviours off the pitch.
