VfL Wolfsburg’s Community and Social Responsibility Strategy includes Walking Football

The German professional football club is participating in the Morethanfootball Action Week to show their community engagement. For quite some time now, VfL Wolfsburg is more than just a professional sport club. The club plays a large role in society. The image that the club portrays is not only constructed by the eleven players on the pitch, but additionally by the actions, which the club’s takes outside the stadiums. Football is more than 90 minutes on the pitch.

Commitment to the community is one of the features that characterizes today’s world. Therefore, the club aims at living more consciously and strives for actively developing and participating in society. For that reason, community engagement and environmental activities have become increasingly important.

One of the community programmes, which the club delivers to contribute to the society is ‘Walking Football’. Currently, the club is even offering new test training session to expand the teams. (wLogo_European_Legends_RGB-01eekly training)

But what is Walking Football?

Walking football is a game of football, where the players walk instead of run. The sport is designed to support people above 50 years old, to get fit or maintain an active lifestyle independently from their age and level of fitness. The programme supports participants to get back into football, if they had previously given up due to age, injury or health reasons.

To date, the programme has seen many health benefits of the participants including lowering heart rates, blood pressure, weight loss and better mobility. The programme is providing participants opportunities for social interaction which is a unique outcome, which integrates participants back into society by tackling social isolation.
